Hon. FREDERICK STEWART, L.L.D.,

Sir,

Acting Colonial Secretary.

Hongkong,

11th August, 1885.

103

I venture to trouble you with the enclosed correspondence with the Acting Commandant of the Royal Engineers and to express the hope that His Excellency the Administrator may see his way to the equitable adjustment of what appears to be a case of hardship.

I do not wish to part with any portion of Inland Lot No. 671 as I urgently require it for my own special use, for which it, and it alone, is adapted exclusively. At the same time, if it is indispensable to the Military Authorities, I am entitled to substantial compensation for that which has cost me so much and which is to me of such exceptional and peculiar value.

If it can be arranged between the Departments of the Government I am willing to accept for such portion as the Royal Engineers may require, double the area somewhat further from the Sea, on the South side of Hill Street to the rear of Inland Lots Nos. 674, 675, 676 up to the Latrine. Part of this ground is occupied by Squatters, who will remove their buildings to a place nearer the water for which they have already made application. Or, if it should be deemed more convenient, there is an area on the South West side of the Slaughter House which I would accept on the same conditions

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

(Sd.) GRANVILLE SHARP.

P.S.-Or at the back of Inland Lot No. 763 & 764 there is a piece of land covered with brich rubbish fifty feet high. This would do.

Royal Engineer's Office, Hongkong, 12th August, 1885.

GRANVILLE SHARP, Esq.

Sir,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th instant, with its enclosures respecting your Inland Lot No. 671.

As the matter is in the hands of the Surveyor General for settlement it will be necessary to refer your letter to him.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

(Sd.) E. M. LLOYD Major, R.F.,

For C. R. E, (on teave.)
